Top Dogs for 2007-2008
The AHS JETS team took first place out of 12 teams in the regional JETS competition. JETS TEAMS is a national engineering competition held at various sites around the country. The morning session focuses on solving engineering problems (this year focused on thrill rides for amusement parks) and the afternoon session focuses on open-ended design challenges. Both sessions are solved collaboratively by a team of eight students. The Athens High team won 1st place out of 12 teams in our regional competition by a wide margin. Based on that same score, the Athens High team placed placed 4th of 27 teams in our district of Ohio.

The AHS "Elementals" Envirothon team won first place at the recent multicounty envirothon. Team members are Amy Goodnite, Alden Gillium, Alice Dicken, Kelsey Taylor and Katie Schmitthaur. They will compete in the Area 5 envirothon on April 28 where they must place in the top 4 to compete at the state envirothon on June 11, 12 and 13.

Writers Contest. Here's the sonnet that so impressed the judges.
The Athens High School Team competed in the OCTM (Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics) State Tournament on February 28, 2009. AHS Team members took 1st, 2nd, and 4th place. Xiao Ma took 1st place, David Lou and Larry Wu tied for 2nd place, and Patrick McDonald and Joey Stanley tied for 4th place. This ranked Athens High School in 2nd place in level 3 (which is schools with 164<n<258 students per grade) Athens High School's team ranked 16th in the state when you do not consider school size. Xiao Ma will be competing in the next level of competition March 28th at Capital University.
The Athens High School Team also competed in the AMC (American Mathematics Contest) 10 (for sophomores) and AMC 12 (for seniors) on February 10, 2009. The AMC 12 Team members had a sweep for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Xiao Ma got 1st place, Serge Alexeev got 2nd place, and Christopher Holliday got 3rd place. The AMC 10 School Winner was Meelim Lee. Xiao Ma will be competing in the next level of competition March 17th at Athens High School.
Congratulations go to Steve McLaughlin who will once again represent AHS at the OHSAA State Wrestling Meet. The entire AHS wrestling team and coach Kaiser are also to be congratulated for a great season and their win at the district wrestling meet.
Congratulations to all four of Athens High School's National Merit Semi-Finalists who have qualified and become National Merit Finalists. The students who achieved this prestigious status are Duncan Green, David Lou, Cora Wilen, and Samantha Williams.
Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Soccer team for capturing the district championship on Saturday, October 25.
Athens High School Band junior trumpet player, Nick Simko has been selected to perform in the 2009 OMEA All-State Band in Columbus, Ohio. OMEA All-State is a highly competitive high school music event. Students from around the state of OHIO are selected based on a taped audition sent in last spring.
