AHS Top Dogs for 2007-2008

AHS science teacher Tom stork has been selected as the Teacher of the Year for Excellence in Science Education from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.  The foundation only gives one such award a year.  Congratulations on a well deserved honor.

Congratulations to Emily Russell who received her State FFA Degree on May 2nd at the Ohio FFA state convention. The state degree is the highest degree the state association can bestow on a member and is recognized by a gold FFA emblem. In order to receive this award, Emily raised and kept records on her 3 cows, 2 heifers and several market animals for the fair. She also had to complete various improvement projects and participate in several FFA activities at the local, district, state and national levels. Emily is the first member of the Athens FFA to receive this award.

Congratulations go out to the Athens High School boys varsity tennis team. They beat Chillicothe 3-2 at the Ohio University indoor tennis courts Thursday, May 8 to win the SEOAL championship. This makes the third year in a row Athens boys have won the title. They head to sectionals in Portsmouth with a perfect 14-0 record on Monday, May 12.

Congratulations to the Boy's and Girl's Track teams. The girl's finished first and the boy's second in the Nelsonville-York Rocky Brands Track Invitational.

Congratulations to sophomore Ashley Luerhman! Her sonnet "Imagination," won third place honors in the 2008 Ohioana Robert Fox Award for Young Writers contest. Ashley has been invited to attend the May 10th opening of the Ohioana Book Festival and read her poem for the crowd, which will include about forty nationally known Ohio authors who have had books published during the past year.  View her entry here.

Congratulations to the Athens High School Band members and directors. The band competed in the District 17 Concert Band contest and scored straight superior ratings!

Congratulations to the AHS Wrestling team for "pinning" first place and becoming League Champions at the SEOAL tournament.  Four wrestlers placed first in their class - Stephen Rodriquez, John Lazier, Joey Young (2nd time) and Steven McLaughlin.  AHS wrestlers Joey Young who placed 6th and Steven McLaughlin who placed 4th at Districts and have qualified for the state wrestling tournament. Steven place 6th at the state tournament.

Congratulations to our Mock Trial team members who qualified to move up to the regional finals of the Mock Trial competition.

Congratulations to the AHS Swim team which placed second overall at sectionals with the girls placing first. Alden Gilliom, Laura Tobar, Hannah Urano and Karen Watson will advance to districts.
